Kai Nielsen, Zeus and Io (1918–1920)

Kai Nielsen’s sculpture of the two entangled bodies of Zeus and Io represents a motif derived from Greek mythology. The tale tells how the Greek god stormed down from heaven to embrace the beautiful nymph Io. The two became lovers and had several children. On the other side, Hera, the wife of Zeus, in her jealousy transformed Hera to a childless heifer.
