Erling Neby's Collection
Installation shot: Øystein Thorvaldsen / Henie Onstad Archive
The hi-fi enthusiast Erling Neby is perhaps best known for his popular TIVOLI radios.
As an art collector, he has built up a large private collection of concrete art that includes works with clear parallels to Henie Onstad Art Centre’s own core collection. Some forty years in the making, the Neby collection contains such renowned names as Jean Dewasne, Victor Vasarely and Olle Bærtling, together with works by a younger generation of Nordic artists influenced by concretism. Given the resurgence of interest in concrete and geometric abstract art, the Neby collection constitutes an important reference point also for contemporary art.
This exhibition is one of a series featuring private and public collections, in which the Art Centre focuses on various types of collecting activities and the role of the art museum. Henie Onstad Art Centre itself started out as a private collection, and in these exhibitions it explores current circumstances and how different private and partly public collections differ from and compete with the museums and their collections. The series also offers a rare opportunity for people to get acquainted with these collections.
