The Berlin-based video artist Omer Fast explores how reality and truth are created and communicated.
Videostill Nostalgia
The work of the Berlin-based artist Omer Fast addresses major issues in contemporary society. Fast is not interested in truth or reality as such, but in how they are produced and communicated.
Fra virkeligheten (From Real Life) refers to the many magazine stories we are confronted with on a daily basis, stories that describe “real-life” experiences. But what do we regard as real, true and credible? What do we make of different stories and the ways they are told in moving pictures?
During his stay at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter we made an interview with Omer Fast about his work. The video is online at YouTube:
The two video works by Omer Fast on show here, Nostalgia and 5000 Feet is the Best, have been selected because of the important questions they ask, such as:
– What is a witness’ statement?
– How does an interviewer influence what a witness says?
– How do we create “truths” through the retelling of private and shared experiences?
– What happens when such stories are retold using words and pictures on media such as television?
