- Ann Cathrin November Høibo is one of the most interesting emerging Norwegian artists today, says Chief Curator Milena Høgsberg at Henie Onstad Art Centre.
alpelue by Norwegian artist Ann Cathrin November Høibo (b.1979) is the first in a series of works specially conceived for a selected room at Henie Onstad Art Centre. Each year from 2012 onwards, a young artist will be invited to create a major work in collaboration with the Art Centre. For months Høibo has worked in a room below the gallery space for which she has developed the multi-part installation.
alpelue, the title of Ann Cathrin November Høibo’s exhibition at Henie Onstad Art Centre, could be an object grabbed arbitrarily from the artist’s studio. Like all the materials Høibo puts to use, she has chosen the word for its sound and phonetic quality, brushing aside its meaning and symbolic connotations. This malleability of physical position and use (or purpose) runs like a red thread through the artist’s work to date. Even when exhibited, the works feel complete only insofar as they could easily be reassembled in new arrangements, like clothes lying on a bed, waiting to be tried on.
Ann Cathrin November Høibo was trained at the National Academy of the Arts, Oslo, and Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main (2011). Recent exhibitions include Christopher Burden on my Shoulders (2012) Standard, Oslo; Something in the Way, Lofoten International Art Festival, Kabelvåg; When in Rome, Malta Contemporary Art, Valletta; og The Human Pattern,Kunsthall Oslo, Oslo. A catalogue is released in conjunction to the exhibition.
